Gwendolyn Knight-Humphrey
January 3, 1935 - December 14, 1993
Gwendolyn Knight-Humphrey was born in Brunswick Georgia where, as a child, she was pre-destined to speak out at a time when blacks had very little equality. She was known to share memories of her experience as a young girl going down to the local Dairy Queen for some ice cream. This was in the days of covert racism. Gwen went to the window to order some ice cream and was told to go to the other window, which served blacks. She responded, “I see what I want, and I don’t need to go the other window.” This was repeated once more and because the cashier did not want a scene, she decided to serve Gwen what she wanted from the “white only” window. This event remained in Gwen’s mind and was the beginning of an intrinsic devotion to take a stand for injustice. This was also the event that would change her life, steering her into politics and grass roots mobilization. After moving to Tallahassee, she dedicated her life to outreach and educating people about their rights and the need to become actively involved in decisions that affect them. Gwen firmly believed that people should recognize their power and insist that government be responsive to the people they represent. She was instrumental in numerous door-to-door voter registration drives and spent countless hours educating the public about the political process and their need for involvement. She wrote book about the political process and their need for involvement. She wrote books on successful campaign management, lectured on political involvement, and traveled nationwide delivering her message. Gwen worked as a Math Professor at Florida A&M University for 30 years where she also encouraged her students during the 60’s to participate in the political process by taking an active part in the struggle for civil rights. Gwendolyn Knight-Humphrey served as President of the Democratic Women’s Club of Florida 1985-1989 and President of the Florida Democratic Black Caucus of the FDP, 1988-1991. She was President of the Tallahassee Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and President, Progressive Democratic Women’s Club of Leon County. Shortly before her death in 1993, a luncheon honoring Gwendolyn was held at the Tallahassee Civic Center. The Keynote Speaker and close friend was Shirley Chisholm, first black woman to serve in Congress. Shirley delivered an emotional and politically charged message ending with “like Gwen would often say, “When you see me coming, get out of my way. I’m on a mission,” Chisholm said, choking back tears “That’s Gwen. That’s Gwen”.
